Moving records from the systems you are leaving into the system you are adopting: extraction, cleansing, deduplication, transformation, load and reconciliation. Also the decisions nobody enjoys, such as how much history to bring and what to do with records that cannot be made valid.
How it runs.
Profile the source first, because the data is never as clean as the owners believe. Agree the rules for what transfers, what is corrected and what is left behind, with a named business owner per domain. Then load repeatedly into a test environment, reconciling counts and values each time, until a load is boring.
Where it fits.
On every system replacement, and it starts earlier than most plans allow for. Migration is usually the task that moves a go-live date, and it is almost always because it started too late rather than because it was difficult.
